Stephen Ministers

Pastors will always be on the front lines of care, especially during times of crisis.  But..there are always many more needs for on going, one-to-one care than pastors can effectively meet by themselves.

Our church decided to utilize a training program for lay people in our congregation.  Stephen Ministries in St. Louis, Missouri, is a not-for-profit, educational organization founded in 1975.  Stephen Ministries provides training and resources to thousands of congregations and organizations worldwide.  A fifty hour course is required to become a Stephen Minister at Essex Alliance.

Stephen Ministers are equipped to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to individuals in our congregation who are experiencing difficulties such as:

  • loss of a loved one
  • hospitalization
  • divorce or separation
  • loneliness or discouragement
  • unemployment or a job crisis
  • terminal illness
  • incarceration
  • aging
  • and many more

A Stephen Minister meets with their Care Receiver privately and confidentially--on a weekly basis, to listen, care, encourage, support, and remind them of Christ's presence in their life.
